Description
The arcaded terrace walks at Aberglasney, built with rubble stone, enclose three sides of a walled garden and are situated on sloping ground, open on the uphill (eastern) side facing the house. The western side, which is the earliest section, features a nine-bay arcade with a central segmental-headed arch flanked by four lower round arches on each side. Inside, it has a tunnel vault. The southern side includes a single bay return that is part of the western arcade, also with a round arch and tunnel vault, and it retains a cobbled floor with a central drain. Beyond this, there are five segmental-headed arches leading to bays with individual segmental vaults. The eastern end had former steps that were undergoing restoration at the time of inspection.
On the northern side, there is a narrow and tall segmental arch that leads to a dog-leg passage containing a segmental-headed niche. The rest of the northern side consists of five vaulted bays similar to those on the southern side, with restored steps at the eastern end.
The outer sides have several openings. The northern side features a single doorway in the western end bay, which is full width but has a lower segmental arch, while the eastern end bay is open at the back. On the western side, facing the pond garden, the outer wall has a batter at the base and includes a narrow segmental-headed doorway from the dog-leg passage at the northern end, a narrow segmental doorway in the adjacent bay, and a taller segmental opening in the central bay. The wall of the upper walled garden is attached at the southern end, which includes stone steps leading to segmental-headed doorways in the end vaulted bays.
The restored terrace has a coped parapet that is lower on the inner side, and on the outer western and northern sides, it features broad crenellations with scooped embrasures.
