Description

Erryd is a mid-18th century gentry house with a history linked to the Griffiths and Price families. Originally part of a 1200-acre estate, it passed through several occupants including William Davys, David Morgan, Rees Price, Mrs. Price, the Rev. Thomas Matthews, and John C. Davies, who emigrated to the United States. The Williams family were tenants into the early 20th century.

The house is built of rubble stone, with a cement-rendered front façade. It features steep-pitched slate roofs with swept eaves and roughcast end stacks. The main two-storey front range has five windows, with two rear wings. The front range includes a cement plinth and rusticated quoins. It has narrow, eight-pane hornless sash windows with stone sills and a broad four-panel door with a plain overlight, set within an early 19th century, pedimented gabled porch supported by tall, slim, octagonal slate piers with square bases. The east end gable has 19th-century bargeboards, a small attic casement, and an eight-pane sash window on the first floor. The west end is rendered and windowless, featuring 19th-century wavy bargeboards. The north-west rear wing is the original part of the house, with an eight-pane sash window on the first floor and a C20 ground floor window on the west side, and a rendered north end stack. The north gable has a small attic light and stair-lights, the upper one with a brick head and the lower with a 12-pane sash and timber lintel. The north-east rear wing, added in the 19th century, is longer with a lower-pitched roof and a roughcast north end stack. The east side has a large roughcast side-wall kitchen stack, a range of 12-pane sashes to the left and a two-window range to the right, also with 12-pane sashes on the first floor, a 16-pane sash and a deeply-recessed door below, with stone voussoirs to the window heads. The north end has two small ground floor windows, and the west side a range of 12-pane sashes.

The interior retains significant original features. These include three-panel doors to the cellar and a ground floor room; deep window recesses; fielded-panelled shutters; boxed-in beams in the front rooms; and a blocked massive chimneybreast at the west end. The cellars have 19th-century brick linings. A broad, mid-18th century, oak dog-leg staircase rises in four flights, with square newels, turned balusters and a moulded rail. A steep set of steps leads off the first landing to the 19th-century wing. The first-floor landing has three-panel doors. One south-west first-floor room has an 18th-century cornice and a full-height panelled cupboard with unusual ogee-derived ornament to the top and stencil patterning inside; some panels appear to be reused from the 17th century. The roof has a well-preserved triple-purlin structure with pegged collar-trusses, four to the main roof and two to the rear wing.

Erryd is a good example of a mid-18th century gentry house retaining its original character.
