Description

The building at Gilwen is a barn and cowhouse, constructed from whitewashed rubble stone and topped with slate roofs. The barn features a long range under a single roof, with a lofted cart-house on the left and the barn itself on the right. There are two cart entries on the left, separated by a stone pier, with timber lintels above and a single loft window over the second entry. The barn section on the right includes a loop, a high door, two loops, and a second high door, with the first high door located roughly in the center of the entire range. All doors have timber lintels. The south end wall contains a loft door, although the former steps have been removed. The rear of the building has similar high doors and loops, while the north end wall features three loops.

The cowhouse has a lower roof and includes six doors with timber lintels, five of which lead to the cowhouse and one to a separate end stall. The second and fourth doors are partially blocked, and there is one door in the rear wall. A loft light is situated in the east end gable.

Inside, the barn boasts a six-bay roof supported by large tie-beam-and-collar pegged trusses. The cowhouse has an unusually broad span of tie-beam trusses for its six-bay roof, three of which are supported by thin angle struts. There is an internal loft opening in the end section, which contains two trusses.
