Description
Abergwenlais House is a Grade II listed building that includes a mill and outbuildings, constructed from whitewashed rubble stone with slate roofs. The structure consists of three ranges arranged in a roughly L-shaped plan. The two-storey house is located at the north end, with a taller mill at an angle to the left and outbuildings extending to the east.
The house faces southeast and features stone end stacks, with the left stack being larger. It has a two-storey, three-window range that is irregularly spaced, featuring a broad left bay and two closely spaced windows. The windows are hornless 12-pane sashes, accompanied by a half-glazed door. Stone voussoirs and slate sills are present. To the right, there is a single-storey outbuilding with two windows in its end wall. The rear of the house is whitewashed and has two 12-pane sashes on the first floor, along with two 20th-century ground floor windows.
Inside the mill, the ground floor is supported by three heavy beams, while the first floor features pine beams. The roof is notable for its fine arch-braced collar trusses with diagonal struts above the collar, and bolted joints. A massive timber horizontal shaft for a hoist is located in the roof. The barn has a later 19th-century roof with stapled collars and consists of four bays.
