Description
Lakefield Community Centre, formerly known as Siloh Congregational Chapel, is a notable building constructed in 1878. It features a monumental and individual classical style, made from ashlar and rubble stone. The north front is dominated by a very large pediment supported by a giant order of Corinthian columns and pilasters. The columns are squat and raised on high pedestals, which create the appearance of a high plinth for the ground floor.
The façade has five bays, with the central bay being wider to accommodate paired windows. The three central bays are slightly recessed at the first floor, showcasing two large attached Corinthian columns and flanking square Corinthian piers. The outermost bays feature Corinthian angle piers. Each bay has an ashlar raised pedestal, while the outer bays are finished with plain rubble. The broad central bay has a rubble wall with an ashlar blank elliptical-arched recess, and the intermediate bays contain arch-headed doors with plain fanlights and keystones that break through the base of the colonnade to a moulded course at an indeterminate height.
The first floor is entirely ashlar, featuring arch-headed windows with moulded arches, carved imposts, and panelled piers. The outer windows extend the full length, while the intermediate windows are approximately two-thirds the length and rest on stone sills. The central bay has paired windows adorned with large scrolled keystones and elaborate decoration on the pier panels, finishing at about four-fifths the height on a bracketed sill.
The pediment is topped with a full ashlar entablature and a heavy modillioned cornice. The tympanum is made of rubble, with a flush ashlar band surrounding a large keyed roundel in a flush ashlar circle. This circle is inscribed with 'Siloh AD 1878' and the band reads 'Trefnyddion Calvinaidd'.
The front of the building is enclosed by cast-iron railings with an intersected oval pattern atop a low rubble wall. There are three matching gates with panelled cast-iron piers marked 'Thomas and Clement, Llanelly'.
The interior has been gutted except for a shallow elliptical curved ceiling, following its conversion to a community hall in 1980 by W Griffiths, Son and Lewis. A low entrance addition was also added to the west side in 1980.
