Description
The former Buckley's Brewery features large industrial maltings with an attached barley kiln, built from local stone with dressed quoins and voussoirs, and topped with slate roofs that have a brick dentilled course at the eaves. The maltings is four storeys high with a basement and consists of eight bays. Its southeast elevation, which faces the river, includes two wide segmentally arched openings and a narrower arched doorway leading to the basement, followed by eight small windows on each floor. These windows have shallow arched heads with voussoirs and distinctive long skewback blocks, maintaining a consistent rhythm, with some retaining timber slats. The north elevation has similar detailing, although there has been more alteration to the window arrangement, the original layout is still relatively clear. There is some damage in the eastern-most bay, including a partial loss of the gable wall.
The barley kiln is attached to the western-most gable and is a two-storey structure with a square plan and a pyramidal roof that ends in a truncated wooden cowl. While the lower openings have been altered or newly inserted, an original window with similar detailing to that of the maltings survives in the upper storey.
Inside, the building features large open floor areas with relatively low ceilings, typical of a floor maltings. The main structure remains largely intact, consisting of two rows of cast-iron columns that support timber cross beams on shaped bearers on each floor. The wooden floors are mostly intact, though missing in the eastern bays where hoppers were later added. The kiln structure has been lost from the barley kiln.
