Description
Zion Baptist School is a two-storey building constructed from rock-faced snecked rubble stone, featuring extensive ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The south front has a tripartite design, with a broad central section that includes a raised pediment and narrow side bays adorned with ashlar balustrades. The building has a plinth, a heavy band over the ground floor, a string course beneath the balustrade, and a blank panel at the center with the plaque 'Ysgoldy Sion 1913'. The pediment sits above this central section.
The outer bays are highlighted by raised piers with ashlar quoins, while the central section features similar piers flanking the ground floor, which are topped by ashlar half-octagonal piers that rise to pointed caps beside the pediment. The pediment itself is decorated with an apex urn and a small stepped triplet that includes a louvred center light. On the first floor, there is an arcade of four windows that are deep-set in flush ashlar surrounds, with a sill-course that steps out over ashlar pedestal bases rising from the main band below. The windows are small paned sashes with marginal bars. The flanking bays contain small arched sashes on the first floor, each topped with Baroque segmental cornices on brackets and panelled piers.
The ground floor features a triple arcade supported by short half-fluted Roman Doric columns, with moulded arches and linked hoodmoulds. The central window showcases 'Florentine' timber tracery with two arched lights and a roundel above, flanked by panelled doors with plain fanlights on either side. The outer bays have small windows set in heavy arched and shafted surrounds, complete with moulded arches and keystones, and paired plaques beneath the sills.
The frontispiece includes one bay that mirrors the design on each side, leading to rendered two-storey sides with four windows. The upper level has paired arched windows, while the lower level features large arched windows with 'Florentine' timber tracery.
The forecourt is enclosed by a low rubble wall topped with iron railings, complemented by stone gatepiers and iron gates. The railings extend in front of the chapel to the east and along the Water Street side.
Inside, the building originally had a full-height hall with an end gallery supported by iron columns, although a false ceiling has been inserted at the gallery level.
