Description
April Cottage, formerly known as the Almshouses, is a building designed as four cottages of unequal size, arranged in an H plan with gables facing the street. It is constructed from local gritstone ashlar in irregular courses and features tile roofs along with ornamental bargeboards topped with finials. The middle section and the wings are of equal height, and there are two shared chimneys at the apex of the middle range. Originally a single-storey structure, much of the roof space has been discreetly converted into attic rooms.
The main entrance is through a small central porch that originally served both of the middle cottages. This porch features a narrow round-headed outer doorway with arch voussoirs that are bonded with the general masonry. It has double outer doors that are boarded. Above the arch, there is a lozenge tile displaying a monogram and coronet. Each side elevation has a similar porch, which originally served as the entrance to one of the larger cottages but has now been converted into a window.
In the middle range, there are two windows, each consisting of two lights with a mullion and lattice glazing, flanking the porch, along with two similar windows at the rear. The front wings feature four-light canted bay windows. The rear of both wings has been rendered, and the windows have been modernized. Additionally, there are modern rooflights at the rear of the main range and on the left elevation, as well as a large modern conservatory on the left.
