Description
The Church of St Ishmael is a church constructed of rough rubble stone, featuring slate roofs and coped gables, with heavily repointed walls. It includes a nave and chancel, along with a west bellcote. The bellcote at the west end has stone voussoirs forming a single arch. The nave contains two crude 19th-century Bath stone cusped lancets on both the north and south sides, as well as a grey stone segmental pointed doorway on the south side, which has a board door from the early 20th century. There is also a tiny cusped lancet on the north side that may date back to the late medieval period. The south side of the chancel features one yellow-brick cusped lancet, while the east side has a 19th-century triplet window with cusped lights.
Inside, the church has plastered walls and a four-bay arch-braced collar-truss roof with diagonal struts above the collars. The west end of the nave and the center are paved with stone flags. There is a pointed chancel arch with stone voussoirs. The chancel boasts a heavy scissor rafter roof from the early 20th century, with stone flags on the sides and a central area paved with black and white paviours. The west end features early 19th-century timber benches arranged in an L-shape, equipped with kneelers and high boarded backs on two sides of a fine square 12th-century font, which has a massive scalloped bowl on a thick round stem. The timber pulpit, dating from around 1920, is adorned with linenfold panels and upper panels that feature carved symbols of the Passion, possibly created by J Coates Carter. In the chancel, the communion rails are supported by four iron standards and are set on a step leading to the sanctuary, which is paved with two-colour paviours.
