Description
The building east of Carswell Mediaeval House is a tall structure that may have originally been an independent house or service accommodation for the nearby house. It could date back to a time when the property was divided, as Carswell was noted to be two properties as early as the late 16th century. At one point, the building served as a house, evidenced by a chimney flue in one wall, but it has more recently been used as a granary. There is a brick-vaulted platform to the south that is said to have been for a threshing machine.
Architecturally, the building features random rubble stonework and has a gabled roof running east to west, covered with modern sheeting. The undercroft is vaulted and nearly semicircular, with two splayed windows and an original door, along with a non-original door in the north wall. The main floor above the undercroft is elevated above the current ground level on all sides. A modern fireplace is present on the west side, although its flue, which is noted as "clearly recent," may be older. An attic floor was added at a height of about 3 meters above the main floor, accessible by an external flight of steps against the south wall leading to a landing and door, followed by a second short internal flight. This access has since been disused, and the door opening was blocked with concrete blocks and a late 19th-century sash window.
The building is listed as a probable 16th-century structure and is noted for its group value with the Carswell Mediaeval House.
