Description
Palmerslake Farmhouse is a small two-storey farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th century but significantly altered in the 19th century. Modern glazed conservatories have been added to the front and left sides of the building.
The farmhouse features a main range with two windows, facing southeast. The exterior is constructed of rubble masonry that has been rendered and painted, with walls that slightly batter at the base. It has a slate roof with tile ridges and a chimney located at the end of the first extension. To the right, there is a single-storey extension with an attic, followed by another single-storey extension with a loft. The windows are four-pane sash types with recessed frames, and the upper windows are designed as quasi-dormers that penetrate the eaves line and are gabled. Additionally, there is a dormer window within the roof of the first extension on the right.
Prominently attached to the right room of the main part is a large lateral chimney made of rubble stonework, featuring a large rounded projecting oven. The chimney shaft is square, tapers, and has dripstones, while the oven's roof is slated and supported by corbels that create a square shape for its roof.
Inside, the farmhouse is reported to have a domed brick baking oven accessible from the rear of the hearth, along with boarded doors that have old strap hinges on lugs, and hewn purlin and roof trusses.
The farmhouse is listed for its fine early chimney, which exemplifies the traditional local architectural style.
