Description
This is a Baptist chapel, dated 1816 and 1858. The front facade was likely redecorated in 1858, though it largely retains its 1816 fabric. It is a large building with slate eaves roofs, featuring a painted rendered south gable front. The front is cream-painted with red-brown raised angle strips, incorporating pointed moulded hoods over the central door and a large, pointed 40-pane window on either side. Windows have intersecting glazing bars to the heads and painted slate sills. The double-panelled doors feature a Y-tracery head and intersecting glazing bars. Raised inscription strips above and below the window heads read '1816 CROESGOCH 1858' and 'CAPEL Y BEDYDDWYR' respectively. A large circular window, likely from 1858, is set into the gable, and exhibits an 8-lobed rose design with a quatrefoil centre, surrounded by a raised moulded detail. The two-storey side elevations are constructed of rubble stone and feature a two-window range of 30-pane sashes. A rubble stone plinth with a slate course is visible at the base. The north end of the chapel has two long, pointed arched windows.
Inside, the chapel boasts a fine early 19th century interior. A panel-fronted gallery extends around three sides, supported by four by three painted timber columns resting on high bases. A full set of box pews remains, along with painted graining. The panelled pulpit, finished in a mahogany colour, is probably a later addition. A forecourt is enclosed by low rubble walls, topped by rendered gatepiers with concave caps and iron spearhead gates.
