Description
Albany United Reformed Church is a chapel constructed with painted stucco and a slate roof. The building features a tall plain gable with 20th-century plain bargeboards and two plain plaques. Below this is a lower gabled three-bay projection, which also has 20th-century bargeboards. The center of this projection steps forward and includes a tall blank pointed window with a pointed hoodmould above a Tudor-arched doorway, which is also topped with a Tudor-arched hoodmould. There is a plaque between the words 'Albany'. The recessed sides have similar narrow blank pointed panels at mid-height, each with pointed hoodmoulds. Historical photographs indicate that the center panel was originally a window with three lights and intersecting glazing bars, and that the gable above had crow-stepped detailing, with raised piers at the angles of the center bay.
The rear gable end facing St Thomas Green has plain bargeboards and a recessed plaque stating 'Albany Congregational Church Founded 1638'. The center features a raised element that frames a narrow pointed blank recess, topped by a square plaque. This raised feature has shoulders and two steps leading to a triangular top. Each side has a single long pointed dummy window with a pointed hoodmould, although historical photographs reveal that these are modern replacements; originally, there were just two small plain ground floor windows in this area. To the right, there is a small single-storey annexe with a slate roof and a boarded door with an overlight.
The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported to have galleries on three sides dating from 1873, featuring panels of ironwork supported by cast-iron columns. The fittings are from 1891, and there is a large pedimented pilastered pulpit back from 1904.
