Description
This listing describes one of two linked terraced garden buildings located on the north side of the park at Castle Hall. The two surviving structures are arranged in sequence. The first is a large vaulted sub-structure that overlooks a fish-pond, featuring a plain rubble front with three arches and rough voussoirs. Inside, it has three and a half bays by two bays in depth, with a groin-vaulted ceiling supported by plain square piers and blank arches on the rear wall. The inner west door has an eroded stucco doorcase, and in front of the building, there is a pond with a small dock for skiffs.
The second building, located to the west and referred to as the pinery despite lacking clear evidence, is heavily overgrown and consists of three plus six bays. It is roofless, but it was previously topped with a monopitch roof facing north, extending back to a rear retaining wall. This structure is made of rubble stone and features classical details, including remnants of a cornice that steps up at the eastern three-bay section. The upper level has small lunettes, and the main front is divided by raking buttresses between round-arched recessed panels that contain large cambered-headed windows, all supported by rough stone voussoirs. The arched doorway on the west end wall leads into the interior, which contains a sunk water tank in the floor with runnels and a possible boiler chamber.
