Description

The stable block at Clareston is a 19th-century outbuilding range constructed of rubble stone, which was likely originally rough rendered. It features a long, tall classical design topped with a slate roof and a central octagonal timber lantern that has an ogee dome and arched openings. The prominent pedimented centre includes a high round-arched throughway, flanked by two narrow blank arches, all connected by moulded imposts that may be made of stucco. A roundel in the pediment displays a 19th-century cast-iron clock face.

To the left, the range is rough rendered and includes a large arched coach entry, adjacent to a slightly projected end pavilion that also has a pediment and a similar coach entry. Both coach entries are fitted with flush double boarded doors that feature wrought iron strap hinges. The left pediment is smaller than the central one and lacks the brackets, showcasing a pointed glazed lunette with Y-tracery. The right range is shorter and made of rubble stone, featuring no openings before the end pavilion, which has lost its pediment and now has a narrower, taller arched opening with a blank tympanum.

Inside the throughway, there is a high flat ceiling with arched doorways on each side, supported by stone voussoirs. The rear of the stable block, facing the farm court, is constructed of plain rubble stone and has close-eaved roofs on the wings, small square loft windows, and various altered ground floor doors and windows. The central arch reaches nearly to the eaves and is also made of stone voussoirs, with a gable at the right end.
