Description
The Town Hall is a 19th-century building featuring painted roughcast walls and a slate hipped roof topped with an octagonal louvred lantern, which has a lead ogee cap and a weathervane. It is a tall, two-storey structure with a three-window range, highlighted by a projecting central bay that has a pedimental gable and a clock set in the tympanum. A band runs along the first floor level. The building has very large small-paned sash windows on both floors; the outer panes are half-width, and the ground floor includes a narrow tall outer sash with 12 panes.
The central doorway, likely from the 20th century, features a panelled architrave, a pediment, and panelled double doors. To the left of the doorway, a barometer is recessed into the wall, and above it is a date stone marking the year 1862.
While the building has undergone various alterations, the ground floor remains a single space supported by two early 19th-century iron columns and some slate paving. Behind the Town Hall is a late 19th-century market hall, which features thin iron trusses in its roof. There is also a painted board from 1836 displaying market tolls.
