Description
157 Charles Street is part of an early 19th-century terrace that remains from a once uniform row of eight houses. The houses are roughcast with slate roofs, although No 159 has concrete tiles. The chimney stacks are rendered, while No 157 has a brick stack. Each house is two stories tall with two windows. They feature 12-pane sash windows above and 16-pane sash windows below, located to the left of an arched doorway that has a door with a radiating bar fanlight. The front wall is low and roughcast, topped with spearhead iron railings. Nos 155 to 159 have stucco door hoods, while No 161 has stucco surrounds for its door and windows. Nos 155 and 161 have four-panel doors, while the others have 20th-century doors. No 157 has 20th-century windows.
This section of Georgian terraced houses represents an early phase of development in the town and remains relatively unaltered, except for No 157, which is included for its group value only.
