Description

East Jordanston Farmhouse is a farmhouse of two storeys with a large attic, likely dating from the 18th century. The walls are rendered and coloured, except for the east elevation which is constructed of hammer-dressed masonry. The roof is slate-covered and features stone end-chimneys, similarly rendered and coloured. The front elevation has five windows, which are slightly uneven in their placement. The first-floor windows are four-pane sash windows. Ground-floor windows were replaced with French windows during alterations in 1922. A central, two-storey open porch features a round sandstone arch to the front, with a circular window featuring curved glazing bars above. A chimney stack projects from the west gable. The east stack, serving the kitchen hearth, is flush with the wall, and incorporates an attic window, with the flue routed around the wall thickness. A staircase turret is positioned at the centre of the rear elevation.

A two-unit rear wing includes a dairy at the east side and a modern porch at the west side, and has a slate roof. There are twelve-pane sash windows to the west front.

The farmhouse has a two-unit plan, with a central hallway and staircase situated at the rear within a turret. The rear wall of the staircase turret is semi-circular internally. The attic of the main house is a single room with fully exposed roof trusses; these consist of nine bays with regular graduated widths ranging from 2 metres in the centre bay to 0.6 metres in the end bays. Each truss has a generously dovetailed and pegged collar connected to the principals, with the upper surface of each truss facing towards the centre of the room. The rear kitchen contains a large hearth with two ovens.
