Description
The Church of St Nicholas is a Grade II listed building featuring rubble stone construction and slate roofs. It includes a nave, chancel, north porch, and south transept. The western wall is primarily medieval, supported by a massive buttress beneath a bellcote, which is stepped out twice in plan. This wall rises straight to the remains of a slate string-course and then tapers back to the base of a bell-gable from 1865, which replaced a double bellcote. The gables have 19th-century coping, and the north porch and windows feature stone Y-tracery. There is one two-light window on each side of the nave, with a buttress at the northeast angle. The south transept is medieval with a 19th-century south window. A squint is located in the angle to the chancel, which has a 19th-century east window with two lights and a quatrefoil head. The north porch contains a 19th-century door.
Inside, the church has a five-bay 19th-century arch-braced collar truss roof, plastered walls, and a low plastered chancel arch. The south transept features a higher arch with a plastered pointed barrel vault and a broad squint leading to the chancel. The chancel has a broad three-bay 19th-century roof with curved scissor trusses. The furnishings include plain pine pews and a pulpit. On the east side of the chancel arch, there are three inscribed stones, while the south side features a memorial stone from the 7th to 9th century, which is said to be inscribed: 'TUNCCETACE UXOR DARII HIC IACES' (the surface is stained and eroded with damp). On the north side, there are two stones dating from the 6th to 7th century, possibly inscribed with 'PAANUS' and 'MELUS'. The church also contains a medieval font, which has a plain square bowl with a chamfered underside and a circular base with roll mouldings at the top and base. There are no monuments or stained glass.
