Description

Sail Cottage is an attached house that is situated significantly lower than No 21 to the left, with the ground floor positioned well below the modern road level. The building features stone rubble walls, a slate roof, and a rendered stack at the right end. Its long two-and-a-half storey facade has windows grouped closely around a central doorway, leaving wide blank spaces at each end.

On the upper level, there are two narrow four-pane sash windows that break the eaves, each with a gable above. The first floor has two former sash windows that have 20th-century glazing, with rendered voussoirs and rough dripstones above. The ground floor has similar windows on either side of the central doorway, which is set slightly further out than those on the upper floors. The central doorway is a 20th-century ledged door, and all ground floor openings feature dripstones above. On the far right of the facade, there is a blocked-up opening at eaves level, along with a small, illegible plaque beneath it. Previously, the facade was colourwashed.

Inside, there is one fielded four-panel door leading to the ground floor rooms, which have thin beams. A broad central staircase ascends in a single flight and splits into two at the landing. The first floor has four-panel doors and a built-in dresser with panelled doors, ogee heads to the panels, and a dentil cornice. The ogee-moulded joists are also a notable feature. The loft contains six collar trusses with iron bolts securing the collars and double purlins. Incised dates of I+G 1780 and IG 1784 are present, along with truss numbers IIII, V, VI, VII, and VIII.
