Description

Hill House is a two-storey building with a high garden wall made of rubble masonry located to the north of the site. This wall serves as an important visual connection between Hill House and other houses in the village. The wall features uncoursed rubble sandstone masonry, which is rendered and painted on the west and north faces.

The main block of the house has three windows on both its front, which faces the enclosed grounds, and its rear, which faces the street. The house has a half-hipped slate roof with large multiple chimney stacks at each end, which are also rendered and coloured. The northeast wing of the house, which was built later, is constructed from similar stone but features a more regularly coursed technique and limestone quoins.

A notable characteristic of the house is its window design, featuring sash windows with diagonal glazing bars that are closely spaced. The front door is modern and set within a painted surround.

Inside, the main ground-floor partitions have been removed, but some original details remain. There are original alcoves with elliptical heads, two located at each end of the room and one at the rear. A Jacobean-style fireplace is present at one end of the room. All the main windows have panelled shutters. The staircase features a cut string, shaped brackets, and a swept handrail. In the attic bedrooms, pegged hewn trusses are visible.
