Description

The Paddock Inn is a building that likely dates back to the late 17th century and was originally a farmhouse. In 1827, it was recorded as the farmhouse of Arthur Williams, and by 1841, it was noted as the farmhouse of Arthur and William Williams, who were tenants of Charles Matthias. The building has only recently been converted into an inn and restaurant.

The exterior features a two-storey structure made of rendered masonry, painted cream, with a slate roof that has a tile ridge and lateral and end wall stacks. It faces west towards the village street and has a range of four windows on its west elevation. There are 20th-century extensions to the north and east.

A prominent chimney with capping and dripstones is located at the center of the left gable, which originally served the kitchen and has two oven extensions, accompanied by an adjacent buttress. The tops of the oven extensions are rendered. There is also a small end-chimney to the right of the main range. At the front of the house, there is a group of features that includes a lateral chimney with an oven extension on its right and the main entrance on its left. The shoulder of the chimney and other features are covered by a common low slate roof. The porch is open-fronted and includes a stone bench on one side. The windows are 19th-century sashes set in recessed frames.

Inside, the roof of the main range consists of eight bays separated by collar-beam trusses, which are fully exposed in the upstairs dining room. The right-hand bay of the range is larger and leads to a rear wing of three bays. On the ground floor, the bar area features two large exposed chimneys.

The Paddock Inn is listed as a good example of a vernacular farmhouse that retains some early features.
