Description

The Dockyard Walls are constructed from limestone rubble and feature ridged coping, standing approximately 3.5 meters high. The walls are regularly buttressed along the inside with plain raised piers.

The eastern wall begins at the northeast corner by Front Street, opposite the northeast Martello Tower, and extends south along Commercial Row. It includes one opening with tall ashlar piers, likely created for the railway in 1864. After about 400 meters, the wall is set back to the west to accommodate the Market, where there is an indented section featuring a low south-facing doorway from 1862 that provides access to the Dockyard Chapel; this section also includes some musketry loops. A larger entry to the chapel with a cambered head was added later in the 19th century.

The southern wall runs for about 200 meters before curving to meet the main dockyard gateway and lodges, which are listed separately. This section was repaired after 1945. The wall then returns to the streetline west of the main entry; this 400-meter length has two entries towards the west end, one modern and one possibly from the late 19th century, as well as another entry at the southwest corner, which features tall gatepiers.

The western wall extends about 300 meters north before meeting the corner of the former Pater Battery. There is one blocked arch leading from the Mast Pond. The wall previously continued behind the battery to Carr Point.
