Description
East Trewent Mediaeval House is located at the northeast corner of East Trewent farmhouse, which sits on the north side of the unclassified road from Stackpole to Freshwater East. This small building is interpreted as a first-floor house, featuring living space above a vaulted undercroft. It may date back to the 15th century and can be compared to similar mediaeval houses found at West Trewent, West Tarr, Carswell, or Upper Lamphey Park. The 19th-century farmhouse of East Trewent has been built against it, making the west wall of this building serve as the east wall of the farmhouse kitchen.
The structure is constructed of local limestone and sandstone, which has been rendered and whitened. The axes of the vault and the modern roof run north to south. The main entrance, located at the north gable, is now accessed by a modern flight of steps and features an arched door head. The roof, dating from the 19th century, leaves unclear whether the original roof was made of timber or a stone vault. There is no visible fireplace position. The building has four small window apertures with splayed reveals.
The upper floor consists of a shallow segmental stone vault. The undercroft, which has recently served as a dairy, is now used as a store and workshop. Its floor is several steps lower than the entrance door in the south gable wall. There are likely two early windows, along with later dairy windows that have vertical slats for ventilation. An original entrance to the undercroft is located on the east side, featuring an arch-shaped single stone lintel, which has been later adapted as one of the dairy windows.
This building is listed as a probable mediaeval house.
