Description

Portclew House is a 19th-century building constructed from local rubble sandstone and limestone, which is rendered and scored to imitate ashlar masonry joints. The eaves project deeply and feature a lath and plaster cove along with false paired brackets on the soffit. The roof is hipped and covered with slate. Notably, there is a curious hoisting pulley on brackets at the rear of the house.

The main elevation to the south has a range of three windows. Due to the unusually large size of the rooms, the windows appear small in proportion to the façade. The windows are hornless sashes with thin glazing bars. The top storey windows consist of three and six-pane sashes, while other windows have two six-pane sashes. The ground storey features tripartite windows with mullions and two-pane side sashes. At the center of the façade, there is a large semi-octagonal porch with French windows that provide access to a balcony above, which is adorned with Regency cast-iron railings.

Inside, the central entrance hall leads to a staircase, with the dining room on the left and the drawing room on the right. Both of these rooms include large rear alcoves for furniture. The open-string staircase has two balusters per tread and a swept rail that coils at the bottom newel. At the rear of the house, there is a half-storey above that contains a reception room with a slightly Gothick character, featuring French windows that open to a north-facing balcony.
