Description
The Old School House is a two-storey cottage built around 1828, originally serving as a National School. It was described in 1834 as a "commodious schoolroom" for about 100 children, accompanied by a neat cottage for the master and mistress. Funding for the school came from the National Society and Charles Mathias, with additional support from the local Vicar, Rev. J B Byers. The land for the school was provided by Mathias on a 60-year lease. Both day and Sunday schools were held here, with the Sunday school possibly existing before the building was constructed. The school received praise in a report from 1847.
Architecturally, the cottage features rendered rubble masonry and a hipped slate roof with tiled hips and ridge. The front elevation faces west and has two windows on the upper storey and three on the ground storey, where the central window was originally a door. The windows are two-light casements with pointed heads, each having three panes above a transom with curved V-bars. The ground storey casements consist of two panes. A similar window on the north elevation is a copy of those on the front. The cottage has rendered end chimneys with capping. There have been modern alterations, including an extension at the rear, a new main entrance, and a conservatory on the north side. Despite these changes, the building is listed for its group value with the nearby Church.
