Description

The building is an 18th-century house, likely originally a small staging inn called ‘The Venison’. It was acquired by Charles Mathias in 1821 as part of Lamphey Estate and subsequently used as a bakery. Other occupants included Abraham Leach, George Macken, and a governess around 1875. In about 1890, a Tonks baking oven was installed, and its front panel is now preserved on a rear wall, used alongside a traditional brick bread oven. A front panel of a later Princie oven is also displayed. Around 1925, a stable to the south of the house was converted into a new bakery.

The original house and shop face west to the street, and are rendered with a white finish. It has three windows, a slate roof with a tile ridge, and end chimneys that are not rendered. Upper windows are two-pane casements within dormers, the triangular fronts of which are glazed with three panes and V-bars. The dormers have ornamental bargeboards and finials. Lower windows are two-pane sashes. There is a small shop extension to the south, with a blocked opening facing the front.

A rubble stone garden wall runs along the front, with a wooden gate and a coping of spaced upright stones. To the south is a single-storey building with its gable facing forward, formerly a stable that was later used as a bakery, possibly reduced in height. The walls are rubble masonry laid in courses, and the roof is slate with a tile ridge. A small central brick chimney is present. The house, converted stable, and front garden wall are listed together for group value with the nearby church.
