Description
Rowston Farmhouse, which includes an attached Old Bread Oven, is an 18th-century house located 500 meters east of Stackpole Elidyr church. The building faces north towards the farmyard and consists of two storeys plus cellars in a semi-basement. Originally, there was a large chimney at the west end, but only the wall and an oven remain today. This oven is part of a very large semi-circular extension that is rendered and topped with a gabled and slated roof. The kitchen that served this oven has been demolished.
To the south, there is an early rear wing that features a gable on its south elevation. The space between this wing and the main range was filled in during the 19th century to create a double-pile house, likely in the late 1860s when the nearby farm buildings were constructed.
The farmhouse is finished with rough-cast render. On the north elevation, there are 18th-century sash windows on the ground floor, with eight-pane casements above. Above the entrance door, there is a 20th-century reconstruction of an 18th-century sash window. The semi-basement includes louvred openings for the dairy.
The farmhouse is listed for its group value with Rowston Farmyard.
