Description

Bangeston Farmhouse is a two-unit house with a rear kitchen wing located 1 kilometer southeast of the B43 19, accessed by a lane that begins 400 meters northwest of St Petrox church. The building dates from the 17th century and is constructed of local rubble masonry, which is rendered, with slate roofs. All windows are modern.

The farmhouse features a tall lateral chimney at the rear, which is unrendered above eaves level. The front range has a roof of seven bays that may date from two different periods. The kitchen wing includes an attic floor and a roof that is lower than those of the front range. An early entrance with an equilateral-pointed arch is located at the center of the south gable of the main range.

An additional unit has been added to the south in tandem with the original structure, along with a large west extension that has twin gables and a porch.

The most notable feature of the house is its extremely large chimney serving the kitchen, which may be the largest surviving example of its type. On the north side of this chimney is a very large oven extension with a slate roof, currently housing a brick oven of ordinary size. Opposite this extension is a hearth recess for bacon-smoking, also with a slate roof. The chimney is constructed with corbelled small courses and shows heavy soot accumulation.

Bangeston Farmhouse is listed as a sub-medieval house with a finely preserved chimney.
