Description

The Prince Consort Memorial is a late 19th-century memorial statue, constructed in Sicilian marble and grey limestone. The statue depicts a standing figure, approximately 2.7 metres tall, portraying the Prince Consort in military uniform, complete with the mantle and collar of the Order of the Garter, and holding a field-marshal's baton. The figure stands upon a tall grey limestone pedestal, which is raised on a square platform of three grey limestone steps. The pedestal is robustly detailed, featuring battered sides, chamfered angles, and a heavy cornice. A coved lower moulding is present between large, recumbent console scrolls that extend diagonally outwards. Four rectangular white marble tablets are set into the pedestal, each with quadrant rebates at the angles. These tablets display, to the south, the arms of the Prince Consort; to the north, the arms of the Princes of Wales; to the rear (west), the monogram of Victoria and Albert supported by a Welsh dragon; and to the front, an inscription reading 'Albert Dda, Priod Ein Gorhoffus Frenhines Victoria' - 'Albert the Good, Consort of our Beloved Queen Victoria'. The plinth bears inscriptions indicating the dates of the memorial’s foundation and unveiling, and records the Prince Consort’s birth date (26 August 1819) and death date (14 December 1861). Diagonally-set corner blocks support the scrolls. The platform itself is inscribed on the south side with the name ‘H Maule Ffinch, Archt, Tenby’ (architect), and on the north side with 'George Thomas, Builder, Pembroke'. The statue’s group value lies in its commemoration of a significant historical figure and its quality of artistic execution.
