Description

Hescwm Mill, also known as Felin Hescwm, is a Grade II* listed building constructed from rubble stone. It features a half-hipped corrugated iron roof that extends over a double-width lean-to on the right, which is likely an addition. The gable front includes a boarded 2-light loft window, positioned to the right, with a timber lintel, and a stable door on the ground floor to the left, framed by lightly dressed grey limestone voussoirs. Stone steps are located to the right of the door. The front elevation is made of green dolerite stone, which was commonly used in the area during the late 19th century, suggesting that the building may have been rebuilt at that time.

The lean-to on the right has a timber-lintel cart entry on the ground floor, set low due to the slope, along with a ledged loft door featuring a raked head above. The stone steps likely led to a wooden platform in front of the door, which is no longer present. To the left of the lean-to, a spur wall projects before the final lean-to at a lower level, which has an end-wall door. The east side wall contains one small window in the center. The rear wall is home to an overshot wrought-iron water wheel, which is missing its buckets and appears to have replaced a smaller wheel, measuring approximately 12 inches in diameter. Above, there is a 4-pane loft light.

The mill retains its complete machinery, including a large cast-iron pit-wheel that cuts into the wall at an angle, indicating it replaced a smaller wheel. A pine hurst-frame houses the primary drives and gearing, and the dresser is also preserved. Open timber steps lead up to the loft, which contains two pairs of millstones sunk below floor level, along with unusually intact timber horses and hoppers. The roof features collared rafters and pulley wheels for two hoists.
