Description
The dovecote at Forge Cottage is a structure made of uncoursed random rubble masonry, consisting of sandstone and limestone. It stands approximately 3 meters tall to the base of the roof, which is neatly corbelled in smaller courses and has a conical or domed shape, although the top courses are missing.
The northern doorway has been damaged due to recent use of the building as a calf shelter, but it has been repaired and a timber frame has been inserted. The damage suggests that the opening originally featured a low segmental arch.
Internally, the dovecote has a diameter of about 2.7 meters and shows no evidence of a potence. It contains more than 200 pigeon-holes arranged in ten rows, with up to 25 holes per row, and there are no shelves present. The floor is paved with rough stone, which is likely a recent addition.
