Description

St. Twynnell's Church is a Grade II* listed building featuring sandstone masonry, with some sections constructed in large courses for the nave and tower, while other areas are in random rubble. The western and northern parts are partially rendered, and the church has slate roofs with 19th-century verge parapets.

The tower is built in two stages and sits at the west end of the nave vault, showcasing the substantial nature of the nave vault. The lower stage above the nave has a rough vault that spans east to west and includes a window facing east. The upper stage features a steep corbelled dome covered with slate, which is concealed by the parapet. There are louvred belfry openings on the north, east, and south sides, and a stair turret located in the southwest corner of the tower. The tower parapet is supported by corbels, and a similar corbelled detail, though less pronounced, is found at the top of the stair turret.

The nave is unusually long and narrow, measuring approximately 17 meters by 5 meters, and has a tall pointed vault. There is a blocked remnant of the north transept, while both the south transept and the porch are vaulted and open fully to the nave. A squint connects the south transept to the chancel. The chancel arch, enlarged in the 19th century, is designed in two orders. The chancel features a timber roof with scissor beams and includes a vestry to the north with a large stone chimney. The east window is a three-light design, and other windows throughout the church have been restored in a lancet style. The chancel floor is laid with Minton encaustic tiles that display the arms of Lord Cawdor. Additionally, there is an undecorated Norman font of the cushion type, supported by a short pillar with a base.
