Description

Penmorfa Calvinistic Methodist Chapel is a building constructed from squared Pwntan sandstone with pale sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The lateral facade features two large arched center windows, an arched date plaque between them, and two smaller arched gallery windows above two arched doors. The windows include 1939 metal tracery with marginal glazing bars and radiating-bar heads. The doors are 1939 panelled double doors with leaded fanlights and stained wood radiating bars. There are also 1939 heavy arched porches made of reconstituted stone, which have chamfered piers, a moulded arch underside, and hoodmoulded coping. To the right, there is a two-storey vestry and schoolroom from the late 19th century, featuring yellow brick heads above cambered-headed four-pane sashes. The rear wall has a pulpit projection, likely from 1939, which includes two arched windows and a long arched window on each side.

Inside, the chapel has an unusually complete interior from 1939, featuring extensive panelling. The deep coffered ceiling includes eight main rectangular panels and narrow framing panels, with the main panels having planted rectangular panels in darker wood, rebated at the angles. There is a cantilevered gallery that is five-sided, with a panelled front and planted rebated-corner rectangles in each panel. The chapel contains oak pews and a large curved-cornered great seat. The pulpit platform projects from a rear recess that has dado panelling. The pulpit front is panelled with planted strips of dark wood in a modern style. Behind the pulpit is a narrow organ from 1957 and two stained glass windows from around 1939, signed by William Morris & Co, Westminster. The coloured glass borders are echoed in the sides of the leaded lights to half-glazed doors in the corner entrance lobbies, which also feature wood panelling similar to that of the gallery undersides.
