Description
St Davids Club is a late Georgian three-storey building featuring scribed stucco elevations and quoins. The east-facing side has a three-window arrangement that is offset to the right and has quoins at the center, while the Pier Street side has a two-window layout. The building is topped with an overall cornice and a steep slate roof, which has boarded eaves and rendered chimney stacks. It includes horned sash windows, with lintels above the first-floor windows on Eastgate, and a two-storey bay with paired windows on the right side of the Pier Street front.
There have been modern alterations, including paired shop fronts on Pier Street with deep ramped fascias and gabled fascia ends, as well as a similar shop front around the corner on Eastgate next to a bowed Doric porch. This porch features fluted columns, panelled reveals, a reeded doorcase, a petal traceried fanlight, and a six-panel door. To the right, there is a blocked arched opening with a keystone, and a modern shop front at the right end for ‘Wall to Wall Carpets’.
The interior was gutted by fire in 1915, but the entrance hall of St David’s Club still retains a half-glazed inner door and acanthus brackets supporting a segmental arch that leads to the stairwell. The club was established as a "Society of Gentlemen, Merchants and Tradesmen, inhabitants of Aberystwyth and neighbourhood in the County of Cardigan."
