Description
Plas Troedyraur is a house situated approximately 1 kilometre east of Beulah, accessed by a drive leading north from the Brongest road. The house is constructed of whitewashed stucco and rubble stone, with slate roofs and cut Cilgerran stone stacks. It is a two-storey building, comprising a main square three-window range, an added eastern range, and long service ranges to the west.
The main block is stuccoed and hipped, with end-wall and ridge stacks. It features flat metope brackets to the eaves, a slate plinth, 12-pane first-floor sash windows, and arched ground-floor sashes with later stucco arched hoods on consoles. A large, arched, six-panel door with a traceried fanlight sits within a substantial enclosed Roman Doric corniced porch dating from around 1840. The porch has paired columns and pilasters on each side, a pilaster respond, cornice, and flat roof, with arched side windows. The eastern range projects slightly to the north and south, also hipped and with a matching eaves cornice. Its front is painted rubble stone and incorporates a verandah, partially infilled, with three 12-pane sashes above. Within the verandah, two iron columns support a canted bay with margin-glazed French windows and top-lights. The north end has a dummy first-floor window, while the south end features a 12-pane sash and three ground-floor margin-glazed casement pairs, originally extending down to floor level.
The rear of the main range includes three first-floor sashes and a corniced projection in the centre with a pair of plate-glass sashes beneath an original traceried elliptical-arched fanlight. A curved hood mould sits on consoles. A plate-glass sash is positioned to the left, and a margin-glazed French window to the right—both with cornices on consoles—and a verandah supported by iron columns in front of the French window. A centre basement double six-pane sash with an elliptical fanlight and an arched door to the left are also present.
The service ranges, constructed of painted rubble stone, extend west from the north front, with a longer parallel range to the southwest. The south side of this range displays a broad two-window range to the right, followed by a cut-stone ridge stack over a forward break, then a shorter two-window range with a half-hipped west end. A further range extends beyond, breaking forward slightly, with a lower roof, rubble stone ridge stack, hipped west end, and a scattered two-window range.
The building was probably altered around 1840. The interior features a square entrance hall with a modillion cornice and ceiling rose, and a centre rear wall with a six-panel mahogany door. A narrow room to the left, with a similar cornice, provides access to the added eastern range. An apsidal timber staircase curves and backs onto the north facade, with the upper flight cantilevered and stick balusters. A ceiling rose sits above the staircase. The eastern end addition incorporates a former dining room with two timber Ionic columns in the north end recess, an acanthus frieze, and gilt pelmets. A plain 19th-century fireplace is located to the west, with arched recesses on either side; one contains a six-panel door.
