Description
Tanygroes Calvinistic Methodist Chapel, built in 1849 and extended in 1882, is constructed from squared Pwntan sandstone and features a slate roof. The chapel has a gable front with a pediment outlined by a raised strip, complemented by projecting pieces at each end supported by two console brackets. A plain roundel is situated in the pediment. The front facade includes two closely spaced long arched windows and two slightly shorter long arched gallery lights above two flat-headed doors. All openings are framed with recessed cut sandstone voussoirs. The windows contain 1849 small-paned hornless sashes with radiating-bar heads, while the doors have 20th-century doors and overlights. A rectangular plaque in a scroll-pedimented sandstone frame at the center reads, "Tanygroes a Adeiladwyd gan y Trefnyddion Calfinaidd yn y flwyddyn 1849 a helaethwyd 1882."
The sides of the chapel are two-storey with two windows, featuring cambered-headed 12-pane sashes below and arched sashes above, also with cut stone voussoirs. The rear is similarly two-storey with a louvred arched gable opening. The front court is enclosed by low iron railings set on slate-coped low walls, with two painted Cilgerran stone piers topped with cross-gabled caps and double iron gates. There are outer sandstone piers with similar caps.
Inside, the chapel features a pulpit backing on the entry wall from 1882, a three-sided gallery supported by fluted iron columns with curved corners, and long horizontal panels with narrow strips of pierced cast iron and pilasters with arched panels in between. A fretwork cornice runs over the columns. The pulpit is three-sided with steps leading up and front fretwork panels, and there is a narrow plaster arch behind the pulpit. The great seat is panelled, and the plaster ceiling is adorned with a central rose, diagonal ribs, and four corner square ventilators.
