Description

The Wellington Monument is a tribute to the first Duke of Wellington, designed as an 18-metre high upturned cannon or industrial-style chimney. It is constructed from local coursed rubble, tapering towards the top and stepping out at the base, with a funnel that sweeps outwards. A concrete platform supports the monument, and a modern commemorative plaque was added in 1999. The lower part of the monument features a shale/slate pediment that is inscribed with a significant amount of historic and recent graffiti.
