Description
The Town Hall is a classical building dating from the 18th century, featuring a two-storey, five-bay front made of coursed rubble with a plinth, cill band, and band course. The building has a hipped slate roof with wide boarded eaves, and the central bay is slightly advanced, showcasing a raised open pedimented cross-gable topped with a louvred square bellcote, an onion cap, and a weathervane. The pediment includes a modern masonry insill and a clock face, while four pilasters (wider on the outer pair) separate the 12-pane sash windows, which have voussoir lintels. The side bays also have similar windows. The ground floor, originally open, features semi-circular heads above tall multi-paned sash windows. The central entrance includes an arched doorway with double three-panel doors and a six-panel ornate fanlight. The cill band and band course continue around the blind return elevations.
To the right, there are alterations, but the treatment remains similar, with a cobbled pavement in front. The gaol to the left was replaced around 1934-1936 by an extension that is five bays deep, with a further three bays added around 1948, clearly visible in the masonry. This extension has a similar hipped roof with a brick chimney stack and smaller sash windows that continue the band courses. It features two panelled and louvred doors in arched entrances, accompanied by traceried fanlights. A later 20th-century extension to the rear is not of special interest.
