Description
Llys Maldwyn Hospital is a red brick building with painted wedge lintels and slate roofs, dating from the 18th century. It is laid out according to Benthemite principles, featuring a cruciform plan with a three-storey central block and four radial ranges, with other blocks attached at right angles to form four courtyards. The entrance front has dressings in grey-brown stone. The central block has splayed inner angles and large cruciform-paned windows to the splays, which are flanked by smaller windows. A gabled porch with French doors is located on the south angle to the right. The four lower ranges have cambered-headed lintels with wedge lintels and generally small-pane metal glazing. The north-east to south-west ranges are three storeys high, while the south-west to north-east ranges are two storeys high. A two-storey section extends from the north-west range, with its main front facing away from the road. This section features rubble construction over a rusticated basement plinth, with plat bands between the upper and lower floors, and small-pane metal glazing. It has eleven windows, with advanced central and end gabled bays; the central three-window bay has a round-headed window on the upper floor flanked by square windows, and a round-headed window on the lower floor flanked by doorways with six-panelled doors. Double doors provide access to the basement. Widely spaced windows are positioned on either side of the central bay, square on the upper floor and round-headed on the lower, with an inserted door to the left of the stairs. Gabled bays at the ends contain round-headed windows on each storey, with a squat rectangular window to the basement. A large stone chimney is located to the left. Single-storey stone ranges extend from either side of the entrance block, accessed from the courtyards behind; a modern brick addition is present to the right. The ends return as two-storey blocks in stone, with gables to the north-west displaying round-headed first-floor windows, and an added block at a right angle to the north-east. The ends of the south-west and north-east ranges have attached three-storey cross ranges with five bays and a modern addition; the south-west block continues south as a single-storey block with a verandah to the yard, while the north-east block continues west as a two-storey rendered block. A further cross range extends from the end of the south-east range.
