Description
Wye Bridge is a local grey stone structure built in 1779. It features coursed squared stone with a snecked parapet and has six broad arches supported by voussoirs and keystones. The bridge has rounded cutwaters on the west side and pointed cutwaters on the east. The parapet includes central refuges, and the piers display vertical joints that indicate where the bridge was widened, with darker stone visible on the upstream side.
An inscription carved on a refuge in the interior parapet states that the bridge was erected at the expense of the counties of Brecon and Radnor by James Parry of Hay in 1779. It notes that the original stone, after serving its purpose for a hundred years, became completely decayed and was replaced by new stone provided by the inhabitants of Builth in 1879. The bridge was further widened and strengthened by the same counties in 1925.
