Description
The Lion Hotel is a Grade II listed building featuring a slate roof, red brick chimneys, and local grey stone, which is hammer dressed at the front and rubble on the sides. The building has brick extensions.
It stands three storeys tall with a five-bay front. The central and end bays are slightly advanced. The basic L-shaped plan has a long arm aligned with the street and a short arm extending to the rear on the right (west). There is a parallel connected range at the rear (east), and a modern three-storey flat-roofed block fills the former space between the wings.
The hotel has a hipped roof with widely overhanging boarded eaves. All windows are small pane hornless sashes set beneath voussoir lintels. The second-floor central window is a simple nine-pane sash, while the others are broad tripartite sashes. On the first floor, the central window is a simple twelve-pane sash, and the others are also broad tripartite sashes. The ground floor windows are larger versions of those on the first floor. The central doorway is round-headed, with a white painted surround and jambs, leading up two stone steps to a deeply set double door beneath a semi-circular fanlight. Above the door, a canopy incorporates cast iron railings from around 1900, though the current form is from the mid to late 20th century. At ground level, there is a shallow plinth with low vents to the cellar.
To the right (west), there is a lower three-storey wing with a low pitched roof and overhanging eaves, which is boarded like the main block. The fenestration has been somewhat altered, but some horned sash windows remain under cambered arched heads. At the rear, there is a tall projecting chimney made of stone, along with a central chimney in this range.
A late 19th-century parallel range to the south and east has a gable facing east. The upper floors feature large pane sash windows with blue brick surrounds and stone sills. On the ground floor, there are large three-light windows with stained glass that illuminate the function room. Between the rear wing and the parallel range, there is a modern three-storey flat-roofed extension, along with a low red brick kitchen extension.
