Description

Litton Court is a two-storey building that features a single pile range. The eastern bay has been converted from an adjoining cowhouse and is built over a cellar. The structure is made of coursed sandstone rubble and has a slate roof, with a flush stone stack on the roadside gable and a squared stone stack to the right of the center. There are five windows, all modern casements, and a projecting bay to the right of the door that has windows with stone flat arch heads. A modern glazed door is set in a former wider opening. On the farmyard elevation, there are 19th-century three-light casements under flat stone heads.

The building has a modified cross-passage plan with an inserted stack. The original easternmost bay is now gone, and the west end was probably extended in the 17th century. Two cruck trusses remain; the one at the west end of the former hall is truncated at first floor level, with the feet visible in the cross-passage alongside a horizontal rail. The smoke-blackened cruck at the east end of the hall features arch-bracing with diagonal struts above the collar. The roof has a steep pitch from the 17th century over the crucks, with further lower-pitched trusses above that and a much later final roof structure. The roof spaces were utilized for sleeping quarters from the 18th and 19th centuries and have boarded floors and doors. The former hall was ceiled in the 16th century with bressumer wall beams, two axial main beams, and central transverse main joists, all featuring wide chamfers and draw stops. The original bacon cratch remains, set between the two main beams, along with numerous ceiling hooks. There is a large inglenook fireplace with a blocked bread oven and a massive wooden lintel, the soffit of which has been later adzed to an arch shape. The west wall of the passage and the west room have narrow chamfered transverse beams with scroll stops. Throughout the building, there are period plank and batten doors hung on gudgeon pins with tulip-ended strap hinges.
