Description
The Midland Bank is a 19th-century building featuring a stylised Classical banking front that elegantly turns the corner between Middleton Street and Spa Road. It stands three storeys tall with an attic, constructed from red brick with notable freestone dressings, including ashlar facing on the entire ground floor, which has a rusticated plinth. The Middleton Street elevation showcases a restrained diaper pattern in the brickwork. The roof is slate, adorned with dentilled red brick chimney stacks and finials on semicircular-headed dormers. The windows are horned sash types without glazing bars.
The corner bay is distinguished by a pediment, with its bases skewed outward to align with the main elevations. This bay features a square-headed attic window with an architrave above a two-storey splayed oriel that has a bracketed cornice. The ground floor includes a bracketed lintel over the main entrance, which is topped by a distinctive shell hood supported by paired pilasters, the outer ones being channelled. The entrance comprises panelled double doors.
Both the three-bay elevation on Middleton Street and the two-bay elevation on Spa Road are accentuated by giant-order Ionic pilasters and have bracketed and dentilled cornices with plain friezes, along with modern banking signs. Each elevation features splayed oriels with shaped brackets on the first floor and two-storey oriels with dentil cornices on the outer bays. The second-floor windows are adorned with architraves and keystones. The ground-floor windows are segmental-headed, featuring lugged architraves and panelled, scrolled keystones. The windows on Spa Road are paired, while those on Middleton Street are continuous and include an additional doorway.
Inside, the corner entrance leads to the banking hall, which is finished with dado panelling and retains a well-crafted panelled counter with scrolled brackets. To the right is the panelled Manager's Office, which still features some frosted glass elements.
