Description
Barclay's Bank is an early 20th-century building featuring Art Nouveau design, constructed with brick and stone-dressed front. The front appears to have been intended to be wider, as suggested by its asymmetry and the irregularly finished stringcourses. It is characterized by two semi-octagonal turrets, which likely originally had larger finials. The central gable pediment is flanked by small octagonal shafts with finials. The stringcourses and friezes between the floors are decorated with volutes and semicircular pediments. The corbelled turrets are glazed at the first and second floor levels, with the right turret terminating at a bulbous bracket adorned with blind shields, while the left turret extends down to the ground.
The building has a hipped slate roof with a brick tile ridge and a lower transverse roof over the central gable/pediment. There is a brick stack at the base of the left pitch. The third floor features a paired sash window at the center, while the first and second floors have three-light windows with a transom. The ground floor has a three-light broad segmental arch on the left and a similar but lower arch for the entrance, which is flanked by paired pilasters with Ionic capitals and high bases. The entrance includes a large panelled bank door with a plain fanlight above. The original lettering on the left side fascia reads "Barclays Bank Limited."
In front, there is a low Art Nouveau undulating brick wall with stone dressings and sinuous ironwork, including gates leading to the left side passage.
