Description
The Hotel Commodore is a Grade II listed building designed in the Arts and Crafts style, influenced by Webb and Shaw. It stands four storeys high with an attic and features a distinctive five-stepped gable front that is tile-hung. The ground floor is constructed from rubble with whitewashed dressings, while the upper levels display regularly spaced bands of fish-scale tiling. This tiling sweeps out over foliated terracotta band courses between the second and third floors, as well as over a black brick band course between the ground and first floors. The building has tiled roofs adorned with six multiflue chimney stacks that have moulded caps.
The gables are decorated with cusped and ogee-headed bargeboards and feature wide boarded eaves. A broad gable is positioned over an advanced double bay that includes the main entrance. To the right, there is a single bay set back, along with two individually gabled bays that are further set back. The first, third, and fourth floors have consistent 2-light paired sash windows, except for the bay to the right of the entrance, which has 3-light grouped sash windows. The second floor is highlighted by oriel windows with bracket bases, topped with small hipped-roof hoods supported by curved brackets, also extending to the return sides of the main advanced double bay. The ground floor features 4-and 5-light grouped sash windows, and a lean-to hood covers the advanced plain porch that has modern doors.
On the right side, there is a twin gabled extension in the same style, which is a single storey with an attic, made of rubble and tile-hung, and includes twin tile-hung dormers. The left side mirrors this style and has a bay window on the ground floor. There are modern extensions at the rear and to the ground floor on the left.
