Description
Middle Heldre Farmhouse is a two-storey and attic timber-framed farmhouse dating from the 16th century or early 17th century. It features a rendered front and a slate roof. The layout includes a short wide hall block with a two-bay cross wing. There is a two-storey porch opposite the main four-flue stack, which was originally open but now contains a stair-hall.
The farmhouse has heavy framing, and the cross wing features a jettied gable. Inside, there are deeply chamfered beams with check and scoop stops. The hall was originally underdrawn with plaster, while the cross wing has chamfered and stopped joists, with the chamfer returning along the perimeter wall bressumer. The structure includes jowled posts and many original plank doors. The central first-floor wing has bar stopped chamfers. The roof has a double tier of purlins over the hall range and a single tier with straight windbraces to the wing. There is also a chamber above the porch and a cellar beneath the southern bay of the cross wing.
