Description
The Trustees Savings Bank, originally built as the Welshpool and Montgomery Savings Bank in 1863, is a notable example of a purpose-built bank. Before this building was constructed, the bank operated from a room in the Town Hall.
The structure is made of brick with a smooth rendered lower storey and decorative dressings. It features a slate roof with boldly projecting eaves and gable end stacks made of brick, topped with moulded stone caps. The building has two storeys, with a high upper storey and a three-window range, where the central bay in the upper storey is slightly advanced.
To the left, there is a doorway with double doors that have three moulded panels and an overlight above. To the right, there are two sash windows. A string course runs above the ground floor, and a narrower sill band is present for the three upper windows. These windows have recessed panelled aprons between the two bands and are four-pane sashes with finely gauged brick heads. The central window is set forward in an architrave with an entablature hood and features a balustraded balcony that projects on moulded corbels, which are inscribed with the words 'Savings Bank' on their outer faces.
Above the first floor, there is a deep frieze inscribed with the words 'Savings Bank 1863' in fine lettering, along with a projecting cornice. To the right, there is a narrow two-storey extension that includes a six-panelled doorway.
Overall, this building is an excellent and well-preserved example of a purpose-built bank.
