Description
The barn south of Y Dderw is a 17th-century rubble stone farm building with a slate roof. The walls are 98 centimeters thick at the gable end. Originally, it served as a carriage house and stables for the nearby house, but the carriage opening and window facing the drive have since been blocked. At the gable end, there is a 17th-century doorway with a heavy dowelled frame and a timber lintel that features a drip stone course above. There is also a similarly framed door opening above the gable. An external stone stair at the north end provides access to the upper hay store. The barn has a two-light ogee moulded mullioned window with a diagonally set vertical glazing bar.
Inside, the building is divided by ceiling beams into six bays, with a two-bay workshop at the south end, a three-bay stable or cowhouse at the north end, and a central cartshed accessed from the farmyard, which is separated by timber-laced brick walls. The roof consists of three tiers of purlins, a high collar to the principal rafters, and raking pegged struts. The north end features lath and plaster infill walling, while the original pegged rafters have been replaced.
This barn is included as an early farm building and has group value with the Grade II* Y Dderw and another Grade II barn.
