Description

The Griffin Inn is a roadside inn dating from the 19th century, though it has earlier origins. The name is taken from the crest of the Wood family coat of arms. The inn is built of colourwashed stone, with some areas rendered, and has a slate roof. The main two-storey block is four bays wide, and is built around a corner. The second bay, containing the main entrance, projects forward and has a gable. This bay is defined by painted stone quoins, and features double entrance doors with painted quoins and a painted stone lintel. The first, third, and fourth bays have 12- and 9-paned sash windows. A large chimney stack is positioned to the right of the through passage, in the second bay. All windows have raised and painted surrounds. Gable stacks indicate a previous thatch roof. A one-and-a-half-storey gabled annex, originally the service kitchen, is attached to the southwest gable, with a stack at the end. This annex has a four-panelled door and a 12-paned sash window on the ground floor, and two 6-paned casement windows above. Lean-to structures are attached to both ends of the building.

Inside, there is a through passage leading from the central entrance. A room to the right has an end stack with a heavy timber lintel, while the room to the left is entered behind the main axial stack. The annex features chamfered cross beams and an oven and stair positioned at the sides of the end stack.

The building is notable for its prominent location, its association with the local Glanusk estate, and its retention of historic character.
